Pathology faculty to link fatty acids, prostate cancer risk

Dr. Xinchun Zhou, associate professor of pathology, will present the School of Medicine seminar, "Association of Prostatic Fatty Acids with the RIsk, Progression and Racial Disparity of Prostate Cancer," from 1-2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

SON dean to expound on leadership learning with friends

Dr. Kim Hoover, School of Nursing dean, will give the Group on Women in Medicine and Science Seminar Series presentation, "Learning to Lead . . . With a Little Help from My Friends," from noon-1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, in classroom R153 (lower amphitheatre).

CFS founder to offer ways to combat workplace stress

Francoise Mathieu, Compassion Fatigue Solutions founder and co-executive director of TEND, will give a series of Everyday Wellness presentations, "Strategies for Surviving Workplace Stress," from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 22, in room CW106 of the Classroom Wing.

Mathiew will discuss "Compassion Fatigue 101" from 8:30-10 a.m.; "Beyond Kale and Pedicures" from 10:30 a.m.-noon; "Becoming Trauma Informed, the Basics," from 1-2:30 p.m.; and "Grounding Skills for Managing Exposure," from 3-4:30 p.m.

Collegiate scholars set to heat up RICE competition

Top scholars from Mississippi colleges and universities will join Medical Center students in the annual Rural Interdisciplinary Case Experience (RICE) Bowl, an interactive health-care competition with audience participation, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, in the UMMC Conference Center at the Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center.

Sponsored by the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute for the Elimination of Health Disparities, the RICE Bowl is an academic competition in which team members answer questions and solve a complex health-care case. Attendees will have the opportunity to sound off during the event as well.

The Excellence in Research Awards ceremony to honor UMMC faculty and staff who have distinguished themselves with exceptional research is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the student union. A reception will take place after the ceremony.

Dr. Ann Chester, founder and director of the Health Sciences and Technology Academy, will present the Academic Development and Discovery Seminar, "A Rural STEM Outreach Model from West Virginia: Achieving Health Care Workforce Diversity," from noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25, in room 122 of the medical education building.

Grad Studies to host annual Research Day event

sogs_2c.jpgThe School of Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences will host its Research Day 2018 event on Friday, Oct. 26, in the student union.

Oral presentations by postdoctoral fellows and instructors are scheduled from 9-10 a.m. in the second-floor conference center. Poster presentations by postdoctoral fellows, instructors and graduate students will be displayed from 10:15 a.m.-noon in the gymnasium.
